AYLA Launches Permanency Project

The Austin Young Lawyers Association has spent the past few months meeting with members of the Travis County judiciary, the Supreme Court's Children Commission, Teas RioGrande Legal Aid, and the UT Children's Rights Clinics to organize a new project aimed at increasing legal representation of foster children whose permanent managing conservator is the State of Texas.  Currently, foster children in the permanent care of the State are not provided attorneys absent special circumstances, despite the fact the children are required to appear for court hearings every four to six months.  Under AYLA's new Permanency Project, Austin attorneys will be trained and provided the opportunity to accept the pro bono representation of such a child.  The second training session is Thursday, April 5 at noon at the Austin Bar office, 816 Congress Ave. 3rd Floor Longhorn room. Lunch will be provided.  To sign up, e-mail Debbie Kelly at Debbie@austinbar.org.
